Once Again, Correlation Does Not Imply Causation!

July 8, 2010

Guess what?!

After many years of “oh, we just need to make fat kids exercise more”*, researchers have now concluded that, for children at least, exercising less does not cause children to put on weight. They now think that the opposite is true – that childrens’ weight gain causes them to exercise less, possibly because “overweight children may perceive their body image negatively, and as a result choose not to join in sports and exercise”.

I’m celebrating a small triumph here for reason and good sense.

*Which makes me wonder – have none of these purveyors of received wisdom ever been fat? Have none of them ever had the experience of being left out of teams, or left without a partner, for organised PE lessons? Really? Have none of them ever been told that they can’t play football, because they’re a girl? Have none of them, in a nutshell, ever read Bill’s New Frock?!
