News On The Equality Bill

April 11, 2010

I’m a little late with this, but it’s good news, so I’ll say it anyway:

via the F-Word, the equality bill has been passed – according to the parliament website, it got Royal Assent on the 8th. So that’s nice. In summary,

“The Bill will harmonise and in some cases extend existing discrimination law covering the ‘protected characteristics’ of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.”

And, as I last wrote about back in March, it will indeed allow civil partnership ceremonies to be carried out in places of worship. Other things that are worthy of mention are that “gender reassignment” and “pregnancy and maternity” are protected characteristics – you don’t often see those officially mentioned in this context, so well done there, government!
