Today In Cheerful News…

November 10, 2009

In Scotland, MSPs have said, effectively, ‘hey – there’s lots of women being jailed and it doesn’t seem to be working. How about we try something different?’.

In particular, according to the BBC article, “concerns were raised over “limited” quality of mental health care in the jail, and evidence that “too many” women behind bars posed only a threat to themselves.”

And in England, MPs have overturned the vote of the peers to throw out plans to remove infidelity from the list of partial defenses to murder. Which means that said plans can now go ahead. It shouldn’t come as any surprise that the Lords didn’t like it – men outnumber women roughly 4:1 in the Lords, and this is a law designed (in part, at least – it’s a big bill) to protect women.

According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Lords actually has a slightly higher proportion of women than the Commons. I think it’s more a party-political divide in this case, since the votes in both houses went almost entirely on party lines.

Maybe, but it doesn’t have to be an either-or scenario. It may well be a party-political divide, but the Conservatives barely reach 17% women in the Lords, whereas Labour and the Lib Dems both have over 25%. And, of course, bishops sit in the Lords, and you won’t find any women there!
