More good stuff from The Women’s Library

August 19, 2009

Last chance to see – ‘Between the Covers: Women’s Magazine and their readers’ at the Women’s Library in London ends on 29th of August.

The exhibition covers magazines aimed at women from th 17th century right up to the present day. It is heartening to see a topic so often dismissed as trivial treated with serious academic attention. It’s also fascinating from a feminist point of view because some of  magazines have been the focus of critique from the women’s movement. I think  my favourite part of the exhibition was the video display of women discussing how they felt about magazines – presenting them not just as passive recievers of media content but active and critical participants.
